“Repercussion” (Amenity cover)
Secret Fun Club with Ben
This one is from the deep archives and shit is pretty fuzzy down there, but here goes.
In 2001, SFC was still a somewhat new three-piece band with no singer and no plans to find one. We had a practice spot at the infamous Chula Vista rehearsal space/unlicensed halfway house Sweetwater Studios. The owner, Reg T. Miller, was some twisted Randian or proto-sovereign citizen who was deep into conspiracy theories about the origins of the AIDS epidemic and owned a plot of land in El Cajon for aliens to park their space craft.
I initially didn't recall why we picked it, but apparently Sal suggested it because it’s his favorite Amenity song and he had just gotten a new microphone he wanted to try out. I know now that it’s my favorite Amenity song—I love Tim’s Quickness-era Bad Brains riffs and Sergio was always an inspiration on the bass—but I think I maybe decided that it was my fave after we covered it.
Fun fact: Amenity also practiced at Sweetwater back in the late 1980s but never once thought to travel into the future to cover an SFC song. So much for supporting the scene.
Sal recorded the instruments live at practice, putting it to tape on his Tascam ½-inch 16 track tape deck. For the eight people who care, it’s the same tape machine he used to record SFC’s Skull with Antlers a decade later. I honestly hadn’t heard this cover in many, many years, and I’m struck by how great Nathan’s guitar sounds on it given the sketchy recording conditions.
We invited another infamous Chula Vista institution, import-racing enthusiast and fictitious pizzaiolo Ben N., to give the song the angry dad vocal treatment. (John)
